The solution was to put a little FW 800 to 400 adapter in the iMac's FireWire port, and then using the old FW 400 cablke. Somehow this is different from a using a FireWire 800-400 cable.
Now everything works fine.

Summary: FireWire 800 to HDR-FX1E compatibility issue
The Belkin 9-to-4-pin cable worked with a Sony HVR-Z1E but not my HDR-FX1E. The HDR-FX1E now works with the Firewire 9 To 6 Pin IEEE 1394a-b 800-400 Adapter plugged into the iMac FireWire port, and then a standard 6-to-4 pin FireWire 400 cable running between the adapter and the camera. Thanks for a...

Problem SOLVED
I plugged a Firewire 9 To 6 Pin IEEE 1394a-b 800-400 Adapter http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170541053968&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT into the back of the iMac and then used my old FireWire 400 cable to connect it to my camera. The camera now appears in the System Profiler...

I live in the country-side, I am not aware of any Genius Bars in my nearest city, Melbourne, Australia. But I could have a look. I am not in a position to buy anything. As for trashing preferences. I'd try that. Can you post a link please. I do not think I would be willing to downgrade my system in ...

Bongoloid - good luck. Please let us know how it turns out. I have still not heard back from Sony's online form request.

Re: HDR-FX1E incompatible with Firewire 800 and/or OSX 10.6?
I just plugged my friend's Sony HVR-Z1E camcorder into the FireWire 800 port of my iMac using the Belkin cable and successfully captured HDV into iMovie. I am convinced that the problem resides in communication problems between the Operating System and the Firmware in my camera. How much support I c...

Upgrade from Laptop to iMac
acgold7 Thank you so much for trying to help. I have recently upgraded my computer from a Powerbook G4 running OSX 10.4.11 to a quadcore iMac running OSX 10.6.4. The old setup captures fine in iMovie and FCP from my camera. Please clarify now that you cannot confirm/verify personal experience of th...

acgold7's suggestions / reset the camera
Thanks you Doughie for the clarification on frames vs fields (which is what I suspected). As for acgold7's suggestions & questions (thank you for taking an interest, by the way): - I bought the camera new when it was first released by Sony a few years ago and I have never had a problem with it u...

Report received -> camera works in OSX 10.6?
OK. Apologies for being over thorough and thanks for educating me. Coldsweat in macrumours.com forum reports "Yes they do work together, we use FX1E's with both a 27" iMac Quad (FW800) & a MacPro (FW400), both running FCP 7.0.3 on OSX 10.6.4 Although I'm not technical, so can't offer a...
