Re: Capturing from Sony FX7 or Sony HC-9
The most common reason for this not to work is a settings mismatch somewhere. If you shot in HDV, make sure, on your cam, VCR HDV/DV is set to HDV and i.Link CONV is off. On CS4, make sure you have set up an HDV project and your capture and device control settings in the capture window are also HDV....

In your area I've been hearing good things about Armato's. Jersey, I think.

Re: HELP! SONY HDR-HC5 LCD touchscreen malfunction
You'd probably have to buy the part direct from Sony or Partstore.com if you can get the part number. It's doable, but from what I understand you need to know origami to get it folded just right. Me, I'd just send it in, in case that isn't the issue.

It's probably a bad ribbon cable -- that's usually what this is. If it's out of warranty I guess there's no harm in opening it up.

Re: Can't play mini dv cassettes on different camcorder
And you're sure there's no way that you might have accidentally recorded the older tapes in DV mode rather than HDV? You've taken one of these old tapes that won't play, and tried playing back with VCR HDV/DV set in each of the three modes: HDV, DV and AUTO? You get a blue screen no matter what? If ...

Re: Can't play mini dv cassettes on different camcorder
If you're getting a blue screen then you may have a settings mismatch somewhere. When in PLAY/EDIT mode, make sure VCR HDV/DV is in the same mode you shot with. If you shot HDV but this is in DV mode, the tape won't play back (and vice versa). AUTO should auto-detect, but doesn't always work perfect...

Re: Can't play mini dv cassettes on different camcorder
It should work. When you say you "can't play," what exactly does that mean? What happens when you try? You're sure the newest cam is in the right playback mode?

You could try putting it in a plastic bag with some fresh packets of silicagel.

Re: sharpness of footages
If you recorded progressive then you should capture as progressive into a progressive project. Choose a 25p easy setup in FCP, not 50i.

Re: Quality of footage transferred
HDMI and Component are both viewing technologies, not meant for transferring (capturing) to PC for editing (if that's an issue). Neither supports timecode so you can't edit in an NLE. The only proper way to do this for HDV is via Firewire, and any artifacts that may arise are on the tape, and are ve...
