Re: Sony HDV Z1E

The six picture profiles are available from the button on the rear of the camera. Each one comprises a group of settings for such things as colour level, sharpness, smallest iris setting, agc limits, gamma etc.. The default profiles are designed to suit certain video types, e.g. normal HDv, DV, peop...

Re: xvColor and AX2000

The downside is that the transitions between colours (as in graduations) may be more likely to show stepping, particularly on 8 bit per colour systems.

Re: Sony Z1 iris

palaceat4am, To add to the above, diffraction is a problem with cameras such as the Z1 with relatively small HD sensors. To control this there is a setting in the menus to limit the smallest iris that can be set, either manually by the user or when shooting on full auto. I normally leave mine to pre...

Re: Sony HDV Z1E

palaceat4am, I agree with everything that has been said above except about time between cuts and zooming. I assume that your work will have some sort of voice over narrative, so very rapid cuts may not be appropriate, particularly if it is intended at a learning audience. The cuts should allow the v...

Re: Canon HV20/30/40 IEEE 1394 connectivity issues with Wind

Duncan, Component is Y Cr Cb (or Y Pr Pb) which is connected to display devices via the supplied cable thus: Y = Composite (green plug) Cr/Pr = Red component (red plug) Cb/Pb = Blue component (blue plug) These are the standard colours for the plugs. See page 68 of the user's manual, top of page. The...

Re: Camcorder vs. DSLR: an indie filmmaker's perspective

Doughie, Nobody (outside the core design teams) know where the next generation of DSLRs are heading. I suspect that we may be looking at a convergence between high-end SLRs and pro cameras designed for 'cinematic' footage. At the lower end will be new ranges like the recently announced Sony (as feat...

Re: Camcorder vs. DSLR: an indie filmmaker's perspective

Doughie, I'm not trying to take any sides here, (my main camera is an FX1E - 1/3 inch CCD chips, MPEG2 codec etc.) I think that there are two different aspects of this. Without doubt, a large sensor and a good matched lens will produce good native resolution images, with attributes such as shallow d...

Re: Quality of footage transferred

Surely, using the firewire interface will result in HDV MPEG2 artifacts. A better way would be to use a low compression route such as a Blackmagic Intensity but that would increase the cost and inconvenience. Let's face it, 25MB/s MPEG2 is quite a drag on image quality. The 1440 line sample is OK as...

Re: On the way from FX7 to AX2000E

Arkady,

Its strange that you didn't notice the reduction in sharpness withg the FX7. With it's 1/4 inch sensors, diffraction would start to reduce theresolution earlier than the AX2000E's 3/8 sensors.

Re: XDCAM HD

I think it also, perhaps, says something about the BBC's somewhat out-of-touch specs for footage. They were probably written a few years ago, maybe most codecs were CBR, not VBR, and anyway i am sure the codecs were FAR less efficient back then. XDCAM EX and other modern codecs, especially VBR code...
