Re: Camcorder vs. DSLR: an indie filmmaker's perspective

Oh i totally agree Steve that these DSLRs are designed for taking stills and the sensor / processing for video is likely very much a 'well we can do this so we may as well add this video feature on'. I have no problem with people taking a different viewpoint - thats what these forums are for. I gues...

Re: Camcorder vs. DSLR: an indie filmmaker's perspective

Interesting. Whilst the writer of that article has some very valid points, and i agree that using DSLRs for video does have drawbacks etc, my suspicion is that he has a hidden agenda as the main reason for him writing the article. I have a different opinion on these new DSLR cams, and I will preface...

Re: Panasonic HDC-HS700

I think that 60p is, perhaps, most often used to get nice slow motion by slowing it down to 24p etc.

Re: On the way from FX7 to AX2000E

interesting observations.

For sure AVCHD is designed as a capturing format and is not a nice editing format. Editing it natively is incredibly processor-intensive. Recommend transposing to ProRes (if editing on Mac) or Cineform AVI if editing on a PC. there are other transcoding codecs too.

Outstanding video filmed on a Canon 7D

Filmed on a Canon 7D in California, take a look at this video which is superbly edited and crafted, and i think really embodies the spirit of the subject matter, as well as being a good demonstration of the versatility of these new cams particularly in using them in unusual and difficult situations ...

Re: On the way from FX7 to AX2000E

thanks for doing that Arkady - this is all good information and for sure interesting comparing the latest-generation of HD Sony machines (AX2000 running AVCHD codec) and a previous-gen cam like the FX7 running HDV codec.

Appreciate all your work ! keep going!

Re: Which Editing package do you use?

Steve - i didnt realise there was some sort of cut-down Cineform codec in Vegas8 (and therefore surely 9).
Can you give me some guidelines on where it is, what it is, and your workflow for using this intermediate codec.

much appreciated.

Re: XDCAM HD

The EX1R seems a natural progression and its about the same size as the FX1E. For those on the forum not in the UK,material from the EX1 is now partially accepted by the BBC for broadcast HD programming now despite its bitrate being below 50Mb/s. That says something about the quality and robustness...
