Panasonic AG-AF100 / AG-AF101 Micro Four Thirds camcorder

Post by Stephan »

Back in April, Panasonic introduced at NAB another DSLR-like camcorder:
- Panasonic AG-AF100 press release
- Panasonic AG-AF100 NAB write-up by Philip Bloom
- Panasonic AG-AF100 preliminary brochure (PDF)

Everything that you come to expect: large sensor, shallow DOF, interchangeable lenses, all common framerates to fit everybody's tastes... and rolling shutter wobble too maybe? (the PDF brochure calls it 'designed for stable camera work' - nicely put ;-)

And also XLR audio, HD-SDI output... so this cam's going to talk to an altogether different audience compared to the Sony NEX-VG10.

No further news since April... Availability expected by the end of 2010. So if you get any news by that time, please share!

Reason: changed title to add European model # (AG-AF101)

As IBC is going on in Amsterdam, Panasonic launched a micro website dedicated to the AG-AF100 series.

$4,995 list price! (Panasonic announces prices and delivery for AG-AF100 4/3″ HD Camcorder) - That's an altogether different league from the consumer Sony NEX-VG10.

Stu Maschwitz also published an interesting point of view about the AG-AF100, and guess what - he's happy and he's not so happy (Do You Want to be a Grown Up?)... and probably will never be.

Note that, according to that Videomaker article and to Maschwitz, Panasonic apparently have solved the aliasing issue! So it seems feasible... for a price and within a larger body than DSLRs.

5K is body only, I wonder what the lenzes cost that are specifically designed for this camera.
If you want to use some good lenzes that cover everything from wide to tele and light sensitive I guess the total price will easily be above 10k +

Posted by Adam Wilt on PVC: Quick Look: Panasonic AG-AF100 MFT Cine-Style Camcorder

Quote:
Adam Wilt wrote:The AF100 will show no moiré, no color shimmering or aliasing. Its anti-aliasing / optical low-pass filter is optimized for 1080p and 720p (when Jan brought the AF100 to the 3D workshop and had it hooked up to a 25” display, the images looked smooth, natural, unaliased, and very clean).

Its CMOS sensor is “best in class” with fast scanning for minimal skew. Yes, it showed some jellocam on fast motion, but it took some pretty severe whip-panning to make it at all noticeable.

Good article on an evaluation of the AF100 during a film-shoot in California. Makes interesting reading :
