Sony HXR-NX30 low lux

Post by Rolando »

What is the shutter speed in low lux mode? The operating guide (p. 113) says 1/25. However, movement is very smooth, contrary to the jerky movement in regular (no low lux) shots with shutter speet 1/25.

Playback with Data Code display will give you the answer!

I like Data Code display when I want to know the specific parameters that were used when shooting. WB settings, aperture, shutter speed, auto vs. manual...

yes on a PAL-spec camcorder, the low-light mode will drop shutter speed by 1 stop. Normal shutter speed on PAL-spec machine will be 1/50th sec (unless you are outdoors when it will raise the shutter if its bright enough), so yes in low-light mode it will drop to 1/25th sec. As the frames are 25 a second, the image will still appear pretty smooth. Works quite well. I do wish that consumer Sony cams gave full shutter-speed control more than they do. On my XR520, i cannot manually select 1/25th sec, the cam does that in low-light mode (as well as ramping up gain to a very high level, sometimes too high in my view).

What trick is applied in low lux mode that 1/25 still looks smooth, but the same shutter speed in normal (not low lux) mode is jerky?

no trick as far as i know, its the same, apart from in low-lux mode it ramps up gain to a high level, i think + 24dB.

1/25th sec *does* look a little different, but to me, the benefits of the extra 1 stop of light, far outweigh any mildly odd look. Its important the subject matter isnt moving too fast. I have done live musicians (guitarist, calm, low-key) at 1/25th sec and it works really well in my view.
