Sony HDR CX115e audio issue

Post by subba »

Hello, I've been shooting a couple of concerts lately and when a movie file exceeds 2 GB, the next movie file is created automatically. The problem is that when it exceeds 2GB it causes a tiny (half a second) audio gap before it continues to the new file. Is there a solution to this?

Thanks!

i have had this myself and i think i too noticed the very small gap. Its a problem if it happens DURING a song. What i tend to do is : do a 2-camera shoot and if both cameras are AVCHD cams recording at same bit rate, then make sure both cams are not started at identical time, so they wont hit the 2GB and both 'cut out' at the same time.

If you are a 1-cam shoot, then you simply have two options :
1) Reduce your bitrate (how many mbps you are recording at, essentially the image-quality setting) that you are recording at, and this will give you a longer recording time before you hit the 2GB limit.

2) Test what the time-limit is when the cam hits the 2Gb limit (it WON'T always be exactly the same as AVCHD is recording in VBR (Variable Bit Rate) and so the actual time-length at any given bitrate when recording will vary slightly. But you can see from your previous experiences how long (approx) the 2Gb limit is, and simply stop / start recording at a convenient time of YOUR choice before the cam hits the 2Gb limit and makes its OWN 'decision'. Basically when you are getting near the limit, pick a gap between tracks that isnt important and do the stop/start then.

Thanks for your reply. I was afraid I am gonna have to do as you suggested in point 2. It records about 16 min before it starts a new file. That sucks and Sony should have thought about this problem or at least inform the purchasers about the audio gap problems. Anyways, looks like I have to stop/press rec around every 14 mins to be sure then. Or buy a better camera. Any suggestions of HD camcorders that don't have this annoying issue?

Thanks.

Guys, the PMB utility rejoins the files automatically and seamlessly. At least it is supposed to. Don't just copy the files from the cam like a Hard Disk. Use the utility. That's what all the metadata on the cam's disk is for.
