I bought a Sony HDR-SR8 HD camcorder about a year ago. Since then I have never been able to find the best project settings, presets and export formats for the media from this camera. I use Adobe Premiere CS4, and feel that I am unable to find the correct Sequence Presets etc.
Also When I export there is definitely a loss in the quality, visually in particularly. I usually export in AVI. (which I don't like because it is so big) and H.264. When Exporting in H.264 I have tried exporting in heaps of different settings but I'm not sure which one to use.
If anyone knows what are the best sequence presets and export formats it would be great to hear from you.

Unfortunately I never used CS4; I jumped straight from CS3 to CS5. I bought CS4 but never installed it once I heard reports about how horrible it was. So it's now two generations old.
But all that aside, there should certainly be an AVCHD 1440 x 1080 60i (or 50i in your case) preset for you to use. CS4 was the first version to support AVCHD so there would have to be a preset available. One thing is that Adobe tends to call 60i, "30i," and 50i, "25i." Choose one of those presets and you should be fine.
You shouldn't be losing any significant quality as long as your render settings are correct. Check your resolution settings in AME and make sure they are HD, not SD. It's possible AVI defaults to SD resolution unless you specify otherwise.
How are you viewing? From PC or on optical disc? Their Blu-Ray presets usually result in very nice discs, at least in CS3 and CS5. As I recall there are presets for "Highest Quality HDTV" or similar. What happens when you choose those?
Can you post screen grabs of your AME settings and export screens?
