John, thanks so much for posting this. Very useful information - and much more cost effective than those Sony $500 Repair Specials! Regards, Frank, Independent Consultant, Somewhere in the State of New York Read Frank's thoughts on HDV [ also covers AVCHD (including AVCCAM & NXCAM) and XDCAM EX ].

Re: Editing software for Sony DCR-SX44
Sam, the Sony DCR-SX44 is an ordinary NTSC-compatible 480i (720 by 480 interlaced) standard definition camcorder. It records to 4 GB of internal non-removable flash memory and/or removable Memory Stick and Secure Digital flash memory cards. The recorded video is lossy compressed using the MPEG-2 cod...

Re: HVR V1E - 25p Progressive editing
I have had the camera for a couple of years. I use Adobe Premier Elements for editing. You might want to consider trying Premiere Pro. I believe that Adobe offers a free trial version. Sony convert 25p to 50i interlaced. There's no conversion involved. They're merely writing out the progressive fra...

Re: Canon HV20/30/40 IEEE 1394 connectivity issues with Wind
I never used HDVSplit! Never felt the need to. It's so easier to capture with your editing program (IMHO again ;-) Then you're one of the lucky ones, sir! I have recommended HDVSplit to many, many people who had regular, full-blown, commercial NLE packages, from Adobe Premiere Pro to Sony Vegas Pro...

Re: Canon HV20/30/40 IEEE 1394 connectivity issues with Wind
Just a couple of quick points - 1. HDV camcorders have IEEE 1394 ports because there's a protocol defined (IEC 61883-4) for the transmission of HDV datastreams over an IEEE 1394 link. (IEC 61883-2 is used for DV transfers.) 2. When transmitting either DV or HDV, the IEEE 1394 link operates in S100 (...

Re: HELP! SONY HDR-HC5 LCD touchscreen malfunction
If you do decide to open up the unit yourself, just be very careful and methodical in your approach. These Handycams are complex little devices and are easily damaged when parts are exposed. Personally, I would take or send it in for repair, but you might just get lucky and find something obvious su...

Re: HELP! SONY HDR-HC5 LCD touchscreen malfunction
I found a partial service manual on the web I'm not sure what you mean by "partial service manual", but I have a fairly complete set of documentation for the HDR-HC5 camcorder, including Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 service manuals, in my Documentation Index (use link in sig and then cli...
