Re: Is my new Full HD Camcorder, really a Full HD Camcorder?

It's even worse than that on the SLR scene. SLRs have native sensor resolutions for stills of many megapixels, e.g. the Canon APS sensors are 5184x3456 which is about 18 megapixels. For video, the resolution is claimed to be 1920x1080, i.e. about 2 megapixels. In reality, with the low quality downsc...

US Broadcast TV.

Just finishing a 9 day break in NYC. Having been used to broadcast digital TV in the UK for a few years now, where many at home complain about the lack of choice, they should come here and see what off air (i.e. not cable or satellite) offers. About four HD channels of mixed TV at HD, with their SD ...

Re: The lull before the storm.

April 9-14. Expect the real announcements to start on Monday 11. What will come up? I imagine Sony will confirm the future for EX recording, whether they will respond to Canon's 50Mb/s 4:2:2 codec or stick with 35Mb/s 4:2:0 is the big question. They should be announcing developments in decent zoom l...

The lull before the storm.

This board has been fairly quiet lately. Are the posters all waiting for the deluge that NAB will seed?

Re: Sony NXCAM 35mm - The real competitor for the AG-AF100

Well, today is the day when Sony says the media can release details of the NXCAM. Let's hope: 1) it lives up to its early promises including price, flexibility and most important of all, performance. 2) when properly tested, doesn't, like the AF100/101, become the subject of heated arguments between...

Re: Thunderbolt

I doubt if there will be much take-up for a while. Apple is the only promoter at the moment and they represent a minority of computer systems. As far as data interfaces are concerned, USB and whatever the removable media interface is, seems to provide a route for compressed data. HDMI and (HD)SDI cr...

Re: More Dynamic Range for HVR-Z1

Surely, flattening the response at the limits of the dynamic range will increase the possibility of stepping in the mid-range. This can be a problem on a 4:2:0 system. A separate recorder would help if it had 10 bit recording, but the Z1 doesn't have any uncompressed digital outputs.

Re: Sony PMW-EX1R and PMW-EX3 Rebates

No snow here in London this week, hopefully we've seen the last of it for this winter. Firstly, the weather report: I ventured out this afternoon. Had to run to the bank (three blocks away; six blocks round trip), and can report that except for some very small piles of the stuff around some of the ...

Re: Sony PMW-EX1R and PMW-EX3 Rebates

No snow here in London this week, hopefully we've seen the last of it for this winter. Went to BVE today. There is a general feeling that Sony will have to do something about the EX's loss of market share owing to the XF300/5's general acceptance by the broadcasters. Nano Flashes and similar are all...

Re: Do-It-Yourself tracks for Davis & Sanford dolly

Not shown were the two Davis & Sanford rigs with fluid heads and dollies! They're not built like tanks but are a pretty good value at about $200. My mate with the FX1000 has exactly that Davis & Sanford tripod. AND the dolly. We built a 6meter track for it too, out of PVC tubing and alloy '...
