Sony SDHC failure... is data still accessable?

Post by MikaKib »

I have a minor techy issue at the moment as Im travelling and shooting mucho video in Central America... so ive been shooting on SDHC cards... i have one 32 GB transcend class 10 card that is doing great, and that ive been backing up on a card reader data storage hard drive... the problem lies with my other card... a 16GB Sony SDHC card class 4.... it was recommended by B&H with my camera NEx-VG10... anyways... what has happened is somehow while shooting one file was corrupted....up until file 35 they are all formatted correctly.. no problem... and every video file shot after 35 on this card has been indistiguishable by my card reader... (fatal error- reformat card) and i cannot transfer the data via computer to another HD as well, to then reformat card without losing data... BUT i can view these videos on the camera no problem... like normal... is this data completely untransferrable I wonder? is it lost? and why did this happen ? I KNOW i didnt inturrupt the card writing... does it just have to do with the fact that it is a class 4 card and somehow it couldnt process fast enough and then reformatted itself? i dont know what to do ? contact sony? of course its not the end of the world if i lose some data... but obviously i cannot reshoot anything... as i´m travelling and not returning to places... i have another SDHD transcend 16GB class 10 card on the way.... but these type of memory cards basically do not exist in central america.. so it is difficult to obtain... any advice? have you experienced anything along these lines before?

Hi Mikalib,

It's almost a month since you post this,

As no one has answered it yet, and I'm curious to know too what possible cause this has happened, I forward your trouble to HDVList at Yahoogroups ( http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/HDV-list/ )

Many thought this caused by the SDHC's physical-built itself, or this SDHC is possibly defected, no idea.

as far as sd cards i can personally account for the failure of several although no failures on SanDisk verson ones which i still have BUT they definitely are squirrely compared to any other flash memory card (compact flash and usb flash drives)

I have 32 GB Sandisk & 32 GB Transcend (all Class 10), I used it on VG-10 and other Sony Camera with no problem until now, so always do delete and format by the camera (not on Computer), wait for complete disk writing process while shooting

We have had some occasional failures on Nanoflash recordings (CF cards). Typically they play OK in the Nanoflash recorder but won't transfer or play in a computer. It seems (to me) to be some sort of registry corruption. Convergent Design is aware of the issue but I don't deal with them (we have an IT specialist that does). One of the 'frightening' things he was told is DON'T use 'Eject' and 'Safe Removal' etc. since this is what can cause further corruption! (so that the recordings then won't even play back in the Nanoflash) This is all very counter-intuitive and I'm glad I don't get involved!!
In general (as implied above) with cards and XDCam disks, we only get problems when operators rip off the batteries without giving the camera a chance to update the registry.

what you describe is bacically what our sdhc cards did. all the transcend ones died in one pass when they decided to give up the ghost. they would just suddenly not be recognized or the files were there and we could copy them off but the disc would no longer format or they were visible on the disc and could not access them just would play in the camera but could not see them via the cord. it was soooooooo upsetting that we gave up on sd cards.

my personal feeling is they bend too easy and that results in the chip board inside breaking or separating or something to that effect. we know what they look like cuz we tore open all of the failures just to see if they are all built alike :-)

Hope helps and hoping your shots can be rescued!
