Panasonic HDC-SDT750 consumer 3D camcorder
Panasonic HDC-SDT750 consumer 3D camcorder
Panasonic just announced a consumer 3D camcorder. It's a regular AVCHD 3-CMOS HD camcorder, with an extra 3D conversion lens which records 3D in side-by-side mode (960 x 1080 resolution).

Re: Panasonic HDC-SDT750 consumer 3D camcorder
In one word – it’s a real disappointment… Common, instead of two lenses for two stand-alone sensors (or one but split-image sensor) Panasonic offers a conversion lens which cuts in half the horizontal resolution and down in 17.5 times the light to the image processor!
But above and beyond, the parallax between “eyes” of that lens is so small (just a few millimeters!) that you will feel a stereo effect only for the adjacent objects, meanwhile the rest of the picture will be perfectly flat.

Come on, be nice and give them a chance! This is the first of a kind.
If I had a few thousand dollars to spare (including the 3D TV), I'd have so much fun experimenting with it. It's like 6 years ago when HDV was introduced: new technology, plenty of promises, equally plenty of FUD, no software that supports it, barely any displays out there... A new frontier... again!

Panasonic AG-3DA1 and HDC-SDT750
Here's some information on Panasonic's two 3D camcorders, the $21,000.00 pro grade AG-3DA1 and the $1399.95 consumer grade HDC-SDT750.

Note that the "K" on the end of the HDC-SDT750K model number simply means that the color is black.
And here's an interview with Randall Dark, a DP who has been doing some work with a preproduction copy of the AG-3DA1.

Re: Panasonic HDC-SDT750 consumer 3D camcorder
Camcorderinfo has published a hands-on review of the Panasonic HDC-SDT750. It's not one of their extensive technical reviews, rather a quick hands-on here. But it does have interesting information nonetheless, particularly since it is hands-on information from people who apparently were able to manipulate the cam and check the 3D footage.
I like the first impressions about the 3D Features. Apart for the tech stuff about calibrating the lens (a new concept in consumer cams, quite fascinating), their message is that - nice 3D provided you work within the cam's limitations: large quantities of light (28 lux min @ 1/30) and your subject located between 1.2m and 4m from the camcorder.
These are tough limitations (I'm not sure I recall the last time I shot something or someone 1.2m-to-4m from my cam, as I am more of the outdoors type). But this inexpensive cam could be quite useful for people who want (or need) to learn and train themselves on the challenges of 3D shooting and 3D workflows.

And also, if anyone wants to check how complex a 3D workflow can be today with the current state of technology, check these experiments by Digital Content Producer:
- 3D on the Cheap, Part 1
- 3D on the Cheap, Part 2
Experimental indeed!

Will the HDC-SDT750 be available in the US without 3D lens?
Re: Panasonic HDC-SDT750 consumer 3D camcorder
If you don't want 3D, get the cheaper HDC-TM700 maybe. Similar 1/4'' 3-CMOS sensors, similar performances I would guess.

Re: Panasonic HDC-SDT750 consumer 3D camcorder
The raison why I won't buy tm700 is because of the video vibration problem, check it out online. Panasonic won't admit it but they get rid of the problem in the latest model.
